Avalon

1922

As advertised, this building at one time housed Umbra Penumbra, Avalon and Magpie as well as the Salvation Army Greenhouse School, an alternative school for street youth. They are all gone now, along with the signs. The building is now home to New Avenues for Youth drop-in education case management center. This view is from SW 9th and Stark.

I remember those signs and those three shops. I used to frequent them in the late '90's grunge era. Magpies has moved up the street, the Avalon is still downtown, somewhere around SW 4th and Stark or Washington or thereabouts. Umbra Penumbra is gone. I have fond memories of a date who had a heart made in the foam on the mocha I ordered. And they had a piano, which was unusual.
